The Food Policy Council for KFL&A formed in July 2013, and began actively meeting in September 2013. The former group, the KFL&A Healthy Eating Working Group, transitioned to form the Food Policy Council.
KFL&A Healthy Eating Working Group
The KFL&A Healthy Eating Working Group was established in Winter 2011, and came together to work towards developing a regional Food Charter and Food Policy Council.
From 2011-2012, the working group developed a Food Charter through community and stakeholder consultations. The Food Charter was endorsed by community organizations and two municipalities; City of Kingston and County of Frontenac. For more information about the Food Charter click here.
In 2013, the working group began the task of forming a Food Policy Council. A consultant (8020 InfoInc) was hired to research and inform the working group on Food Policy Council organizational structures, purposes and formation, in order to assist the working group in developing a proposed draft Food Policy Council Framework and to facilitate a stakeholder session on the proposed draft Food Policy Council Framework. In March 2013, community stakeholders were invited to a consultation session to provide their feedback on the draft Food Policy Council framework.
The Food Policy Council framework: An Initial Framework for KFL&A Food Policy Council was finalized using the feedback from community stakeholder participants who attended the consultation session in March 2013.
In May 2013, the working group opened the application process for recruiting 6-8 members to join the Food Policy Council. Applications were reviewed and high ranking applicants were interviewed.
Food Policy Council for KFL&A

The Food Policy Council held its first meeting in September 2013. The first tasks of the Council include developing a Terms of Reference and a work plan.
