The KFLA Food Policy Council initiated the first draft of the private member's bill, Bill 216, which was taken forward by MPP Daryl Kramp (Hastings-Lennox and Addington). The bill aims to ensure that food literacy and skills education is embedded in the school curriculum throughout Grades 1 to 12.
The first reading of the bill was on October 19, 2020 and the second reading was on October 20, 2020. The private member's bill was carried and went to a Standing Committee for review prior to the 3rd reading. Unfortunately, the provincial legislature was prorogued September 2021. As a result, the Private Member's bill was taken off the table. The Government and MPP Kramp are currently exploring how to move this important legislation forward despite this setback. These talks are on-going, and we will share more updates as we learn them. A big thank you to MPP Daryl Kramp and his staff for their support and advocacy on this issue.
